Effective rate vs. marginal rate
What is a marginal tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the rate you pay on your last dollar of income. It only applies to income above that bracket's threshold, not to your entire income. If someone says they're in a certain bracket, that rate applies only to the portion of income above that bracket's lower bound.
Yours is 22%.
What is an effective tax rate?
Your effective rate is your total tax burden as a share of your gross income, including federal and state income taxes and FICA payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare). It is almost always lower than your marginal rate because the lower brackets tax your earlier dollars at lower rates.
Yours is 21.3%.
